With a clean slate on a Windows 10 machine, it was time to download each and every software tool I use for astrophotography. Because it is a Mac, I had to pick some Mac applications (or at least preferred to – I do have parallels to run Windows apps). For capture I use AstroImager 3.2. I am happy with it. AstroDSLR is digital camera tethering and remote capture application specialised for astrophotography. It controls ISO, aperture (if lens mounted), shutter speed and BULB exposure length, exposure compensation, metering and focusing modes, white balance, image quality and format. It can preview (optionally using LiveView) or capture and save images to selected folder with any file name prefix, count and time lapse, browse captured images and show them in Finder, zoom and stretch them automatically or manually. It can measure FWHM, HFD and the drift of a selected star to help easier and faster focus and align your equatorial telescope mount. Captured images can be plate-solved using public astrometry.net service or local Astrometry for OS X application.
The built-in INDIGO driver is based on ImageCapture API and, in theory, it can work with almost any Nikon DSLR, Canon EOS DSLR, Sony Alpha DSLR-like or mirrorless camera. Not every feature is supported for every camera (e.g. no LiveView or manual lens drive with older Nikon and all Sony cameras), but it doesn't mean, that such camera can't be used. As far as this application is based on INDIGO framework, it can use many INDIGO or INDI drivers for focusers for astronomical telescopes. The drivers for Shoestring Astronomy FCUSB and USB_Focus V3 controllers are bundled with the application.
Even if it can be used separately, it is meant to be used together with AstroTelescope and AstroGuider. Application communicates over INDI/INDIGO protocol and it can be used to integrate with any INDI/INDIGO 3rd party application as well.

DSLR Shutter - Free sequence capture control for Mac/PC + lots of DSLRs. You need a shutter control interface, like this one in order to use this with a nikon however.
Nebulosity 3 - $80 capture and processing software for Mac/PC. Supports a bunch of Canon DSLRs and astro cams.
MicroObservatory - A piece of software that is meant to be used to process images from MicroObservatory.org, it's not really good for much else, but it does a damned good job of teaching people the basics of processing RGB FITS data.
MaximDL - Great CCD Camera control software and decent processing power too.

AstroTelescope - AstroTelescope, is a simple planetarium and telescope control application for the astrophotography. (OSX)
AstroGuider - AstroGuider is a simple to use guiding application for your telescope mount. It can be calibrated semi-automatically or manually, you do not need to take care about camera orientation or pixel scale. (OSX)
