My problem was with Chrome browser, coincidentally on a Chromebook. I finally found a Chrome browser extension just called Private Search (Extensions under More Tools in browser settings [vertical dots at right end of address bar of browser]. Private Search can be turned off, but I just removed it entirely.

I tried a few of the offered tools, and none of them worked. Finally I uninstalled Chrome, ran every anti-malware tool I had, then reinstalled Chrome. That finally worked, and I would recommend it over these worse than useless freebie removers.

Just had this happen to me went through every fix, yahoo blocks you from actively fixing this. so what you have to do is open chrome go to the options thing in the top right, go to the more tools menu and click task manager. Youre looking for an extension called koeijiff or something like then. end the process. Now you can access your chrome settings without yahoo redirecting you to the apps page. go to your settings remove yahoo from your search engines and then remove the extension called koejidif or whatever it is in your extension menu. I went through every fix imaginable and this is what i found to work.

There is a new add on that installed on my computer on 2 Jan 2017 called Safe Search incognito. On firefox go to settings then add-ons then click on recent add-ons and delete the incognito search add on

Only my Chrome on Mac OS was infected. The culprit was an extension 'Domain Error Assistant' ( https://chrome.google.com/webs.. ). That definitely wasn't the one I installed deliberately.

Arrgh, Yahoo! I got it again (such a rookie mistake). This was a great refresher, especially the about:config for FireFox that I somehow always forget.

I use different browsers for different things, cleaning up Chrome was a breeze, and I thought it had gotten my IE, but then I remembered I don't have IE, it got replaced by Edge which was apparently immune to this particular hijack, as was Opera (not mentioned above, but then again, who *ever* mentions Opera or Edge?)
